Job Description
  • A professional approach must be adopted with all patients, staff, and visitors.
  • RMOs must work within their level of experience and competence, highlighting verbally and in writing all orders given by consultants and team members while caring for patients in wards.
  • Provide medical cover, routine and emergency, during duty hours, working with other RMOs to ensure a 24-hour service.
  • Undertake morning and evening ward rounds daily, ideally with nursing staff when available, to ensure patients are visited appropriately.
  • Record patient progress and events in the HMIS system following ward rounds, examinations, communications, or procedures.
  • Seek advice from Consultants and their team regarding patient health issues.
  • Receive handover reports from the alternate RMO and attend ward areas within an hour of starting duty in all shifts.
  • Spend time in theatre observing procedures if agreed with the Consultant, and return to wards and departments as required.
  • Perform certain medical procedures within their experience and competence, as advised by the Consultant.
  • Liaise regularly with nursing staff to monitor patient progress, and see patients upon request or if their condition requires.
  • Discuss discharge medications with patients and prepare discharge summaries upon patient discharge.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient medical information, avoiding leaks at all costs.
  • Provide urgent medical attention and treatment to staff or visitors in case of accidents or sudden illnesses, in coordination with the medical team.
  • Remain on hospital premises during duty; in case of absence, the previous MO should stay until a replacement arrives to ensure continuous coverage.
  • Comply with all hospital policies and procedures, especially those related to Health and Safety at Work.
  • Maintain effective interpersonal relationships with staff, patients, and families.
