Responsibilities:

  1. Planning and organizing resources and activities.
  2. Following regular sampling schedules within a specific environment.
  3. Collecting samples from different types of environments, such as agricultural sites.
  4. Quality control in manufacturing processes, e.g. checking for signs of contamination.
  5. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.
  6. Writing up research findings and producing reports.
  7. Keeping up with new research and attending national and international conferences and other events.
  8. Liaising with colleagues from non-scientific departments.
  9. Teaching students, preparing assessments, and providing feedback.
  10. Providing information and advice to colleagues and external bodies.

Job Specification:

  1. Observing, monitoring, and identifying microorganisms.
  2. Tracking microorganisms in a range of environments.
  3. Monitoring and assessing samples from a range of sources.
  4. Using a variety of identification methods, including molecular techniques, to test samples.
  5. Developing new techniques, products, and processes.
  6. Developing and planning methods to prevent the spread of disease.
  7. Developing and registering new medicines, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and pharmaceutical products.
  8. Planning, implementing, and evaluating new products in clinical trials.
  9. Developing products, such as enzymes, vitamins, hormones, and antimicrobials.
  10. Growing microbial cultures, e.g. for use in the food and beverage industry or in agriculture.
  11. Working with specialist computer software to undertake studies and research.
  12. Managing and overseeing laboratory work.
