Job Description:

Reelo is looking for software developers to help us build the next generation of marketing automation software.

About our software development

  • Our tech stack is NextJS, Tailwind, Prisma, Postgres, Hosted on Digital Ocean.
  • We follow agile the way the Agile Manifesto intended. We track development in a Kanban board, do daily standups, and measure our progress in terms of working software delivered to customers.

What we're looking for

  1. Critically important
    • Must have a strong internet connection and a decent computer setup for remote work.
    • Must have solid experience with TypeScript, either commercially or in personal projects. Bonus points for background knowledge in functional programming languages such as Rust, Elixir or Scala.
    • Must have strong experience with React and a React-based framework or library (e.g., Next.js, Remix, or pure React). While knowledge of newer features like Suspense, Server Components, or Server Actions isn't required, a strong understanding of fundamentals such as custom hooks, Context API, and component libraries is essential. Bonus points for knowledge of bleeding edge UI libraries like Solid, Svelte, or Elm.
    • Must have experience using an ORM (e.g., Prisma, Django ORM, Entity Framework) either commercially or in personal projects. The specific ORM isn't important, but practical experience is required. Bonus points for broader database experience, such as projects using raw SQL, NoSQL databases, or wide-column stores.
    • Must have previous experience building backend APIs (REST or GraphQL) either commercially or in personal projects.
  2. Things we like, but not critical
    • We appreciate developers who are knowledgeable and opinionated about different languages, frameworks, and patterns.
    • We value developers who have read the literature on software architecture concepts, such as SOLID, Clean Architecture, Domain-Driven Design, and/or Gang of Four patterns.
    • UI/UX abilities are a plus. Experience with design tools like Figma, knowledge of UX principles, or familiarity with resources like "Don't Make Me Think" shows appreciation for the end-user experience.
  3. Things that are less important to us
    • You don't need specific experience with our exact tech stack — We're happy as long as you have a baseline level of skill in Typescript, React, and ORMs.
    • Years of experience — Whether you have 6 months or 6 years, we care more about what you've learned, built, and accomplished during that time than the exact number of years you've been coding.

What to expect working with us

  • We understand development requires long blocks of time with deep focus and mental clarity. Show up well-rested, take time off when needed, and set aside time with no distractions to get deep work done.
  • We're not super pedantic about code standards, processes, or documentation, but we expect robust, readable, maintainable code.
  • We prefer to assign substantial chunks of work rather than breaking tasks into tiny pieces. Bring your work back for review early and often.

  3. We'll ask you some questions. Some of our favourites are:
    • What's something you've worked on in the past that you're especially proud of, or that was particularly challenging or unique?
    • What are some different languages / frameworks / platforms that you've used in the past?
    • What kinds of project management practices and development workflows do you have experience working under?
    • What are some different projects you've worked on? Which projects went smoothly and which ones didn't?
  4. We'll probably lapse into some free flow discussion, you'll be free to ask us any questions you want to ask.
