Job Description
  • A professional approach must be adopted with all patients, staff, and visitors.
  • MOs must work within their level of experience and competence and communicate all orders from consultants and team members verbally and in writing while caring for patients in wards.
  • Provide medical cover, routine and emergency, during duty hours, working with other MOs to ensure 24-hour hospital service.
  • Evaluate admitted patients by taking complete history, performing physical examinations, and documenting in HMIS.
  • Conduct morning, evening, and night ward rounds, preferably with nursing staff, to ensure patient visits where appropriate.
  • Record patient progress and events in HMIS following ward rounds or examinations.
  • Seek advice from senior team members regarding patient health issues.
  • Receive handover reports from other RMOs/SMOs and attend ward areas within an hour of duty start in all shifts.
  • Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for admitted patients.
  • Manage laboring patients and perform vaginal deliveries, including vacuum deliveries, as per residency/competency level and supervision.
  • Assess and manage patients in ER; complicated antenatal cases should be evaluated by SMO and endorsed by a specialist before admission or discharge decisions.
  • Perform medical procedures advised by the Consultant within their experience and competence.
  • Regularly liaise with nursing staff to check on patient progress; see patients upon request and perform examinations accordingly.
  • Discuss discharge medications with patients and prepare discharge summaries.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient medical information and avoid leaks at all costs.
  • Provide urgent medical attention and treatment to staff or visitors in case of accidents or sudden illnesses, in coordination with the medical team.
  • Remain on hospital premises during duty; if an RMO/SMO does not attend, the previous MO must stay until a replacement is found to ensure continuous coverage.
  • Comply with all hospital policies and procedures, especially those related to Health and Safety at Work.
