Job Description

REGULAR TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities of the Clinical Nurse Instructor include but are not limited to:

  • Orientation of new nurses
  • Development and management of mandatory education
  • Clinical support and ongoing education of nurses
  • Assessment of nurses using clinical competencies
  • Identify and respond to the learning needs of individuals and the service
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of education within the organization

The Clinical Nurse Instructor is responsible for maintaining and developing the following key performance areas:

CLINICAL PRACTICE
  1. Perform nursing practice in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  2. Practice within own abilities.
  3. Demonstrate accountability for nursing practice.
  4. Demonstrate a high level of understanding, knowledge, and skills in relevant field.
  5. Demonstrate expert clinical knowledge through problem-solving and decision-making.
EDUCATION
  1. Conduct needs assessments using a variety of strategic tools. Assist learners in the assessment of needs and identification of outcomes.
  2. Incorporate principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.
  3. Coordinate orientation of new staff with Nursing Education Services and Human Resources.
  4. Develop and coordinate education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation.
  5. Develop and coordinate core education to address patient population-specific nursing care.
  6. Identify and evaluate instructional materials in all types of media and formats.
  7. Adjust content and teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs.
  8. Provide educational opportunities that benefit nurses at all stages of their career development.
  9. Deliver competence-based programs for nursing staff focusing on skill improvement and knowledge retention.
  10. Support staff development with educational activities.
  11. Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs.
  12. Prepare short- and long-term planning and programs to address identified needs.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND MANAGEMENT
  1. Undertake components of the performance review process.
  2. Promote and participate in quality improvement activities and organizational accreditation processes.
  3. Participate in relevant committees, meetings, and service activities, providing feedback and disseminating information.
  4. Assess and evaluate the quality of educational resources and equipment needed for nurses' learning needs.
  5. Participate in critical incident debriefings as required.
  6. Participate in the development and review of clinical guidelines.
CHANGE AGENT
  1. Respond to changes in nursing practice and develop programs to support these changes.
  2. Ensure educational programs align with organizational missions, values, and goals.
  3. Maintain flexibility when managing multiple roles and responsibilities.
  4. Interpret and communicate across multiple disciplines.
  5. Promote a safe and healthy work environment.
LEADER
  1. Serve as a role model to promote excellence and safety.
  2. Maintain required educational and clinical competencies.
  3. Seek opportunities to develop staff in various roles.

  7. Lead committees, work groups, and projects related to educational activities.
