- Respiratory Therapists play a vital role in restoring patients' pulmonary function, alleviating pain, and supporting life through the planning and administration of medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
- To meet patients' goals and needs and provide quality care, Respiratory Therapists conduct pulmonary function tests, assess and interpret evaluations and test results, and determine respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.
- Patient support is a key aspect of this role, as Respiratory Therapists help patients accomplish their treatment plan and support their life by administering inhalants, operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.
- The administration of respiratory therapy treatments involves performing drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
- In addition to direct patient care, Respiratory Therapists also direct treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants.
- Evaluating the effects of a respiratory therapy treatment plan requires observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress and recommending adjustments and modifications as needed.
- Discharge planning is an essential part of this role, involving consultation with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare workers to contribute to patient care conferences.
- Ensuring continuation of therapeutic plans following discharge is crucial, and Respiratory Therapists achieve this by designing home exercise programs and instructing patients, families, and caregivers in these programs.
- Recommendations for assistive equipment and outpatient or home health follow-up programs are also made as necessary.
- Critical documentation skills are required to document patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality and protecting hospital operations are key responsibilities that require keeping information confidential.
- A safe and clean working environment must be maintained at all times by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Protocols and policies related to infection control must be adhered to protect patients and employees from harm.
- Developing respiratory therapy staff through providing information and developing and conducting in-service training programs is also an important aspect of this role.
