Job Description
  • A professional approach must be adopted with all patients, staff, and visitors.
  • MOs must work within their level of experience and competence, highlighting verbally and in writing all orders given by consultants and team members while caring for patients in wards.
  • Provide medical cover, routine and emergency, during hours of duty, working with other MOs to ensure 24-hour hospital service.
  • Evaluate admitted patients by taking complete history, performing physical examinations, and documenting all in HMIS.
  • Undertake morning, evening, and night ward rounds daily, preferably with nursing staff, to ensure patients are visited appropriately.
  • Record patient progress and events in HMIS following ward rounds or examinations.
  • Seek advice from senior team members regarding patient health.
  • Receive handover reports and attend ward areas within an hour of duty commencement in all shifts.
  • Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for admitted patients.
  • Manage laboring patients and perform vaginal deliveries, including vacuum deliveries, as per residency/competency and supervision levels.
  • Assess and manage patients in ER; complicated antenatal cases should be assessed by SMO and endorsed by specialists before admission or discharge decisions.
  • Perform certain medical procedures advised by the Consultant within their experience and competence.
  • Liaise with nursing staff to monitor patient progress, conducting examinations as requested.
  • Discuss discharge medications with patients and prepare discharge summaries.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and not disclose medical information.
  • Provide urgent medical attention and treatment to staff or visitors in case of accidents or sudden illnesses, in coordination with the medical team.
  • Remain on hospital premises during duty; if the RMO/SMO is absent, the previous MO must stay until replacement arrives to ensure continuous coverage.
  • Comply with hospital policies, especially regarding Health and Safety at Work.
