We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist in Clinical Chemistry to join our Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This role will involve providing clinical chemistry services to patients and supporting research and development projects.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for interpreting medical histories, educating patients on genetic topics, assisting with diagnostic algorithms for Biochemical Genetics Lab, ensuring efficient virtual consultations, and coordinating seamlessly with Pathologists to enhance patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a patient database/registry to track referrals, specimens, consultations, and lab results to ensure the ordering provider is aware of the results.
- Plan, develop, and conduct training (e.g., in-service education, workshops, seminars, conferences) for health professionals and conduct awareness sessions for patients/families.
- Develop a curriculum for Genetic Counseling Training Program.
- Develop clinical history forms for genetic/inherited disorders.
- Assists in the development of policies and procedures for NBS and high-risk screening programs.
- Have current knowledge of literature and public policy issues in NBS and high-risk screening.
- Attend conferences and seminars to stay current with new training approaches, federal procedure changes, and revised service delivery techniques.
- Analyze and interpret complex data sets generated from mass spectrometry and chromatography instruments.
- Utilize specialized software for data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation to ensure precise results.
- Develop and validate analytical methods and testing protocols for new analytes.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to support various research and development projects.
Requirements
- A PhD in Biochemistry/Genetics with experience of working at a Mass-Spectrometric laboratory.
- Expertise in analyzing samples using mass spectrometry and chromatography-based instruments, including ICP-MS, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and HPLC.
- Strong skills in analyzing and interpreting complex data sets generated by mass spectrometry and chromatography-based instruments.
- Demonstrate and utilize a depth and breadth of understanding and knowledge of genetic diseases, genomics core concepts/principles, standards for biochemical genetic and molecular testing of patients.
- Knowledge and limitations of all screening and diagnostic tests being offered at AKU and abroad for referrals.
- The ability to construct relevant, targeted, and comprehensive personal and family histories and pedigree analysis.
- The ability to assess individuals' and their relatives' probability of conditions with a genetic component or carrier status based on their pedigree, test result(s), and other pertinent information.
- The ability to effectively educate clients about a wide range of genetic diseases based on their pedigree analysis.
- The ability to facilitate educational activities, lectures, workshops, symposia.
- Demonstrate an ability to formulate a research question in the clinical laboratory setting.
