Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled Blood Bank Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing blood components, performing quality control checks, and ensuring the safe storage and transfusion of blood products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Component Preparation: Prepare packed cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, cryosupernatant, washed red cells, and modified or divided products from whole blood.
  • Work List Preparation: Create work lists for component preparation and ensure accurate labeling and documentation.
  • Sample Reception and Quality Control: Receive whole blood and donor samples, perform quality control checks on packed cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate, and verify the integrity of samples.
  • Centrifugation and Assay Processing: Perform proper centrifugation of donor samples according to standard operating procedures (SOP) and proceed samples on routine and emergency modules.
  • Infectious Disease Screening: Receive donor samples for infectious disease screening in software and create batches for processing.
Advanced Skills:
  • Calibration and Control: Proceed calibration of different assays and controls, including ICT MP, RPR/Syphilis, and other laboratory tests.
  • Donor Sample Management: Retain donor samples properly as per departmental policy and maintain accurate records.
  • Unit Inventory and Verification: Conduct unit inventory and perform visual inspection and unit verification of blood products.
  • Storage Equipment Maintenance: Perform quarterly alarm check testing of storage equipment, including blood bank refrigerators, platelet agitators, and freezers.
  • Serology Skills: Perform basic serology skills, including blood group ABO and Rh typing, weak D testing, DAT, cross-matching by tube method, and blood grouping and cross-matching on automation.
  • Intermediary Serology Skills: Perform intermediary serology skills, including allo-antibody screening, antibody identification, phenotyping, and resolution of ABO discrepancies using pre-warm technique, saline replacement technique, and techniques for enhancement of cold antibodies.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Reagent Cell Preparation: Prepare reagent cells for all campuses according to best manufacturing practices.
  • Emergency Release and Transfusion Reaction Workup: Handle emergency releases and perform port transfusion reaction workups and forward them to the Pathologist for review.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Maintain highest level of professional and ethical behavior, ensure compliance with American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) standards, participate in external and internal quality assurance programs, and implement quality assurance policies in the department.
