Bureau Chief Job Description

As a key member of the newsroom team, the bureau chief plays a pivotal role in setting the news agenda for publication, station, or media guidelines. This position requires exceptional judgment and experience to maintain journalistic integrity, accuracy, and fairness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with other newsroom managers to establish strategic objectives and implement human resources strategies related to training, hiring, and staff management.
  • Employ expertise to develop professional contacts with subject-matter experts, government officials, and other influential figures to obtain news information effectively.
  • Coordinate and assign news coverage to reporters, photographers, videographers, editors, producers, and other members of the news team.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a broadcast, print, and/or online journalist, including news reporting, editing, and production.
  • Exceptional reporting skills, with excellent news writing and editing abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to cover a range of significant public affairs issues and subjects, such as government and politics, the economy, education, health, immigration, legal affairs, the environment, and the arts.
  • Experience with web, mobile, and social media platform editing and publishing, along with high proficiency in on-air voicing skills.
  • Ability to interview and communicate with a variety of individuals, research, and communicate through various mobile and digital tools.
  • Capacity to work under deadline pressures and collaborate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in video production, multimedia production, or database production is highly valued but not essential.
