
Blood Product Technician Specialist

Job Summary:
Main Responsibilities- Prepare and process various blood products, including packed cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, and washed red cells.
- Create work lists for component preparation and receive whole blood and donor samples from the collection area.
- Perform quality control tests on prepared products to ensure compliance with established standards.
- Component Preparation:
- Packed Cells: Prepare packed red blood cells from whole blood by centrifugation or filtration methods.
- Platelets: Separate platelet-rich plasma from whole blood through centrifugation or other approved techniques.
- Fresh Frozen Plasma: Freeze plasma from whole blood to preserve its coagulation factors and other essential components.
- Cryoprecipitate: Cryopreserve plasma from whole blood to create a product rich in clotting factors.
- Cryosupernatant: Separate the supernatant from cryoprecipitate to create a product for transfusion purposes.
- Washed Red Cells: Wash red blood cells to remove residual plasma and prepare them for transfusion.
- Modified or Divided Products: Prepare modified or divided products, such as buffy coat or leukoreduced products, according to established protocols.
- Quality Control:
- Packed Cells: Perform quality control tests on packed red blood cells, including hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, and cellular morphology.
- Platelets: Conduct quality control tests on platelet-rich plasma, including platelet count, pH, and aggregation.
- Fresh Frozen Plasma: Perform quality control tests on frozen plasma, including coagulation factor levels and sterility.
- Cryoprecipitate: Evaluate cryopreserved plasma for fibrinogen level and sterility.
- Samples and Testing:
- Receive and process donor samples for infectious disease screening in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Create batches for processing of samples and proceed with routine and emergency testing.
- Perform manual assays, including ICT MP and RPR/Syphilis tests, as required.
- Calibration and Maintenance:
- Calibrate and maintain equipment used for component preparation and quality control, including Serofuge, Cell Washer, and Cryofuge.
- Maintain and troubleshoot storage equipment, such as Blood Bank Refrigerators, Platelet Agitators, and Blood Bank Freezers.
- Donor Samples and Inventory:
- Properly store and manage donor samples according to departmental policy and guidelines.
- Conduct unit inventory and reconcile blood units in the Blood Bank Management Information System (BBMIS).
- Communication and Quality Assurance:
- Respond to phone calls and interact with hospital staff and other service partners in a professional manner.
- Adhere to the highest level of professional and ethical behavior at all times.
- Implement Total Quality Management principles to ensure compliance with defined processes and procedures.
- Blood Bank Technology certification is preferred but not mandatory.
- Basic knowledge of serology and ability to perform serological tests, including ABO and Rh typing, weak D testing, DAT, cross-matching by tube method, and automated blood grouping and cross-matching.
- Intermediate serology skills, including allo-antibody screening, antibody identification, phenotyping, and resolution of ABO discrepancies using techniques such as pre-warm technique, saline replacement technique, and enhancement of cold antibodies.
