Research Opportunities in Economic Development

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to support our work on the economic history of Pakistan.

About the Position

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in development, political economy, and applied economics.

Project Overview

The research project involves two main components:

  1. Canal Colony Villages
  • Focusing on the impact of political centralization on long-run economic development in colonial Punjab using a policy-based natural experiment.
  • Testing whether and how quasi-random variation via regression discontinuity technique affects economic outcomes.
Union Councils and Local Governments
  • Exploring the functioning of union councils and other local governments in the 1960s' Basic Democracies system.
Responsibilities

The selected Research Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the development of these projects from early stages to completion.
  • Field visits to collect archival data, which will then be sent for digitization.
  • Cleaning and analyzing the data to verify the existence of threshold rules and effects on public goods provision and development.
Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, candidates must:

  • Be able to travel to districts outside Lahore in Punjab.
  • Have an interest in original scholarship on Punjab's historical political economy and/or strengthening their quantitative research skills for graduate degrees in social sciences.
