Job Description: Material Engineer

Location: Karachi, Pakistan

Overview:

The Material Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all construction materials used on-site meet project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The role involves material testing, verification, documentation, coordination with laboratories, and technical support to project teams.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Material Testing and Quality Control:

  • Perform and supervise tests on construction materials such as concrete, aggregates, soil, asphalt, steel, and cement.
  • Verify that all materials comply with project specifications, ASTM, AASHTO, BS, and relevant standards.
  • Prepare and maintain material testing reports and laboratory records.
  • Conduct mix design trials for concrete and asphalt as required.

2. Material Approval Process:

  • Review material submitting, test reports, datasheets, and certifications from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with consultants and clients for approval of materials.
  • Ensure all materials delivered to the site have valid QA/QC documents.

3. Site Monitoring:

  • Inspect incoming materials and ensure compliance with approved samples.
  • Track material usage and ensure proper storage and handling procedures.
  • Identify defective materials and coordinate with procurement for replacements.

4. Coordination and Documentation:

  • Liaise with laboratories, suppliers, consultants, and the site team regarding material-related needs.
  • Maintain a material register covering all approved materials, quantities, and expiry dates.
  • Support QA/QC team in preparing ITPs (Inspection and Test Plans) and method statements.

5. Compliance and Standards:

  • Ensure all materials are sourced, tested, and used in line with project specifications.
  • Enforce adherence to local building codes, safety policies, and environmental regulations.
  • Recommend alternative materials when required to improve cost, durability, or performance.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education:
    B.E in Civil Engineering (mandatory).
  • Experience:
  • 5 to 7 years of experience as a Material Engineer or QA/QC Engineer in construction projects.
  • Experience in buildings, roads, infrastructure, or industrial projects is preferred.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of material standards (ASTM, ACI, BS, AASHTO).
  • Hands-on experience with material testing procedures.
  • Understanding of mix designs, quality control processes, and laboratory operations.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Good communication and reporting skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with clients, consultants, and internal teams.
