Duties and Responsibilities:

The Lawyer will be responsible for working with the team to ensure timely support in legal matters in accordance with the specified procedures and processes, and maintain a target-oriented work environment.

Under the guidance, advice, and support of the Team Lead ALAC, the Lawyer will be responsible for the following:

1. To deal with refugees/asylum seekers with full respect and dignity.
2. To appear before the Courts on behalf of Refugees/Asylum seekers, keeping in view the Mandate of the Organization.
3. Provide free legal aid and assistance in cases related to the Foreigner Act, preventive laws, civil, tenancy, and family matters.
4. Provide adequate legal advice and counseling to the Refugees/Asylum seekers on various protection issues.
5. Assist and facilitate the PoCs in preparation of legal documents including loss of PoR card, birth registration, Nikah Nama, etc.
6. Conduct and facilitate legal camps/clinics within the jurisdiction of the project area.
7. Facilitate legal information and awareness-raising sessions on refugee rights, policies of the government, etc. at different refugee clusters and urban settlements.
8. Conduct and facilitate capacity-building activities for the police, judicial officers, etc.
9. Organize and arrange meetings with different government authorities and other stakeholders.
10. Represent the organization in meetings with UN organizations or other entities whenever required.
11. Register and process new court cases before the concerned forum/court.
12. Keep following up on the pending court cases and report accordingly.
13. Consistent monitoring and following up of legal cases (if any) referred to other organizations.
14. Disseminate accurate and updated information among the PoCs regarding the Standard Operating Procedures of various government services, the legal status of PoCs, etc.
15. Assist in accessing services available to PoCs provided by government authorities or any other stakeholders.
16. Responsible for preparing and designing the weekly, monthly, and yearly work plan for the project activities in consultation with the concerned ALAC team leader/Field manager.
17. Provide a friendly environment to PoCs where they can easily and freely present their issues and help towards a deeper understanding of their concerns.
18. Refer refugees/asylum seekers to other service providers, sources of help as appropriate.
19. Keep following the objectives and indicators as outlined for the project.
20. Maintain data and records of the project activities including court cases, advice, and counseling, etc. on a daily basis.
21. To remain standby on weekends/national/festival declared off days. This practice will be on a rotation basis.
22. Perform any ad-hoc duty assigned by the supervisor.

RequirementsEducation:

• Desired Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized university.
• Master's degree in Law (LLM) or specialization in Human Rights, Refugee Law, or International Law will be preferred.
• Must be a licensed advocate with a valid Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) enrollment.

Experience:

• Minimum 3–5 years of practical experience in legal practice, preferably in humanitarian law, refugee rights, or protection-related cases.
• Prior experience working with NGOs, UN agencies, or legal aid organizations focusing on asylum seekers, refugees, or vulnerable populations.
• Demonstrated experience in court representation, particularly in cases related to the Foreigners Act, preventive detention, civil/family law, or tenancy disputes.
• Experience in conducting legal awareness sessions, capacity-building workshops, and stakeholder engagement (police, judiciary, government authorities).

Legal Expertise:

• Strong knowledge of Pakistani legal frameworks, particularly laws affecting refugees/asylum seekers.
• Proficiency in drafting legal documents (affidavits, petitions, appeals) and case management.

Communication & Advocacy:

• Excellent oral/written communication skills in English and Urdu (knowledge of Pashto/Dari/Farsi is a plus).
• Ability to counsel sensitively and explain complex legal issues to vulnerable groups.

Interpersonal & Coordination:

• Empathy and cultural sensitivity when working with refugees/asylum seekers.
• Ability to liaise with government bodies, UN agencies, and NGOs.

Organizational Skills:

• Proficient in data management, reporting, and documentation of legal cases.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to emergency/standby duties.

Technical Skills:

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
• Understanding of protection principles and refugee rights frameworks.

Additional Requirements:

• Willingness to travel within project areas and work beyond office hours (including weekends/rotational standby duties).
• Commitment to humanitarian principles and confidentiality in handling sensitive cases.
