GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

This position reports to the Unit Technical Manager/Operations Manager. Performs research MRI/molecular imaging including brain, cardiac, and total body studies, along with the associated computer interactions.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Prepares radiopharmaceuticals according to aseptic technique guidelines, using commercially available kits or recipes for patient studies. Ensures quality control through calibration, chemical and radionuclide purity checks, percent yield, and thin layer chromatography to guarantee solution integrity and minimize radiation exposure.
  2. Determines appropriate radiopharmaceuticals based on established guidelines, consulting with PIs as necessary. Calculates patient dosage and explains procedures to subjects, ensuring cooperation during testing.
  3. Administers radiopharmaceuticals and conducts tests including brain, cardiac, and total body studies. Performs intravenous peripheral catheter insertion as authorized. Acquires, processes, and reconstructs images when appropriate.
  4. Labels patient images according to HIPAA and ACR requirements, including data such as radiopharmaceutical amount, injection time, and equipment used. Archives data to PACS for long-term storage and retrieves studies for review and comparison.
  5. Observes radiation safety protocols, including shielding, handling, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals, to minimize exposure to infectious, radioactive, or biohazard agents.
  6. Ensures correct protocol, radiation dose, and contrast are administered for MRI scans when ordered. Moves and positions subjects for research studies.
  7. Follows institutional and departmental guidelines for patient safety and care. Maintains sterile technique when eluting radionuclide generator systems.
  8. Interfaces with computer systems related to duties and reports equipment issues to the Unit Technical/Operations Manager. Assists in training RAs as assigned.
  9. Performs imaging studies of high technical quality following area policies and guidelines.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Statistical data calculation
  • Computer analysis of image data
  • Experience with MRI, MRI/PET systems, radiation monitoring, PET tracer infusion, and contrast injectors
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Physical ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs, position and transfer subjects, manual dexterity, and good vision
  • Ability to provide age-appropriate care and maintain a professional appearance
Licenses, Certifications, and Education:
  • Required: Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist (Nuclear Medicine) license, ARRT or NMTCB certification
  • Preferred: NMRI certification
  • Required: High school diploma; Bachelor's degree in NM Technology or related field preferred
Experience:

Preferred: 1-2 years of experience
