The Genetics and Aging Research Unit (GARU) in the Charlestown Navy Yard is seeking a full-time Research Technician I to carry out cell culture experiments, wet lab research, animal work, basic molecular biology, genetic analysis, and lab managerial duties. The GARU is a collection of multidisciplinary laboratories with varied specialties all collaborating to seek a better understanding of the molecular underpinnings of Alzheimer's disease and discover novel avenues of treatment.

Position Focus

The candidate will work directly with Dr. Luisa Quinti to identify potential drugs that modulate neuroinflammation and develop novel therapeutic strategies for enhancing clearance of the aggregation-prone amyloid beta peptide in Alzheimer's disease. Responsibilities include performing experiments such as drug treatments of microglial cells, amyloid beta uptake and degradation, and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The project involves techniques like mammalian cell culture, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, fluorescence microscopy, and high-throughput imaging. The candidate should demonstrate interest, self-motivation, initiative, and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Maintain laboratory equipment and organize samples.
  2. Conduct experiments and record data accurately.
  3. Analyze data and assist in interpretation and reporting.
  4. Ensure safety and proper handling of samples and reagents.
  5. Support lab management and equipment maintenance.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Bachelor's Degree in Biology preferred.
  • Candidates in the process of completing their bachelor's degree have a grace period of six months (up to one year if starting per diem) to provide degree verification.
  • Experience in laboratory settings (academic, internship, or employment) preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, and data analysis tools.
  • Strong organizational, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Experience in protein biochemistry, molecular biology, microscopy, and animal handling is desirable.
Additional Duties

Performing experiments such as gel electrophoresis, western blot analysis, immunocytochemistry, maintaining cell cultures, managing mouse colonies, and assisting with data analysis and manuscript preparation.
