Program Description (Background)

The Mental Health Case Manager (MHCM) at International Medical Corps works as part of a multidisciplinary team and within a case management model using a biopsychosocial, multidisciplinary and a community-based approach. They are frontline workers providing mental health case management and other relevant services for people with MHPSS needs.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Promote and introduce the International Medical Corps mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services within community settings and PHCs.
  2. Act as the primary focal point for MHPSS beneficiaries, conducting the full case management process (assessment, care planning, referral, follow up and discharge).
  3. Conduct an overall assessment for all beneficiaries by completing the biopsychosocial assessment and other assessments as required.
  4. Build and maintain a solid professional relationship with clients, their environment, and support network including family, caregivers, neighbors, and others with the client's consent.
  5. Provide psychological and social support to MHPSS beneficiaries at primary health care centers and community settings.
  6. Comprehend, fully understand and commit to IMC mental health case management model.
  7. Work closely with the members of the MH case management team (psychotherapist, psychiatrist, mhGAP-trained healthcare workers) to develop and follow up on care plans.
  8. Facilitate referrals and ensure adequate follow-up of all cases referred.
  9. Conduct outreach activities and home visits when needed.
  10. Prepare and conduct mental health awareness sessions using relevant guidance, tools and IEC materials.
  11. Conduct community-based psychosocial activities.
  12. Prepare and conduct psychoeducation.
  13. Maintain accurate and up to date documentation including activity records and client files.
  14. Attend any training relevant to assigned tasks internal or conducted by any other stakeholder after close coordination and approval of the direct supervisor.
  15. Prepare, participate in and document Case Management technical meetings and case conferences.
  16. Work in close coordination with the MHPSS senior management and focal points on issues related to the field in terms of identification of challenges encountered, gaps, and provide all necessary information to ensure better implementation of activities.
  17. Attend regular meetings with MHPSS focal points.
  18. Responsible for filling all relevant tools and documentation and maintaining regular updates in close coordination with the case management team.
  19. Submit monthly reports, in addition to the data collection sheet that should be filled on a weekly basis to the MHPSS manager.
  20. Report any concerning issues firsthand to the direct supervisor.
  21. Provide reports on awareness raising and other PSS services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A Diploma or Bachelor's in Counselling, Psychology, or Social Work. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  2. Additional qualifications such as a Bachelor's or Master's degree in social work, counselling, psychotherapy, psychological intervention, or other MHPSS related qualifications is desirable.
  3. Typically, 1 - 3 years of relevant and progressive experience in MHPSS service provision, health facility and/or community-based MHPSS preferably in humanitarian/low resource settings.
  4. Previous NGO experience desired.
  5. Awareness of the IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings.
  6. Able to exercise sound judgment and be a proactive problem-solver.
  7. Good interpersonal skills, written, and oral communications skills.
  8. Ability to work within a team structure or in isolation, flexible, and can cope with stressful workloads and work with limited resources.
  9. Honest, hardworking and a self-motivated person. Able to exercise sound judgment.
  10. Commitment to Humanitarian Principles and adherence to ethical considerations regarding working with vulnerable populations.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and ensure high quality work.
  12. Basic skills in Microsoft Office. Advanced MS Office skills are a plus.
  13. Fluency in a relevant local language as well as basic command of verbal and written English.
