The Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department at AKUH provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services to assist adults and children in improving their physical and neurological disabilities. Psychological, social, and vocational interventions are some of the modalities that are employed in order to restore physical functions, minimize pain, and disability of the patients.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Assessing patients and developing and delivering individual speech therapy treatment to improve the patient's auditory comprehension, visual reading perception, oral motor strength, coordination and symmetry, swallowing components of oral phase, pharyngeal phase indicators, verbal expression, word finding skills, speech intelligibility and articulation, voice characteristics, written expression, gestured communication skills, and augmentative and alternative modes of communication.
  • Writing patient assessment and progress notes according to the designed format.
  • Liaising with medical personnel in daily ward rounds and with peers in the outpatient rehabilitation department to obtain relevant information about the progress/needs of patients.
  • Educating and advising patients and their family regarding the diagnosed condition, the treatment plan, the expected prognosis, and the short and long term goals.
  • Participating in internal (in-house) and/or external training programs and research activities.
  • Interacting professionally with patients, families, peers, medical and healthcare personnel.
  • Complying with the department policies and organizational quality standards i.e. JCIA.
Requirements

You should have:

  • MA in Speech Audiology & Pathology from a recognized university.
  • One-year post-education experience as a speech therapist or 1-year traineeship, preferably in a hospital.
  • Sound knowledge of speech therapy theory, techniques, and equipment.
