Key Role Summary

The Special Assets Manager plays a pivotal role in spearheading the development and implementation of special assets management strategies. This key position oversees the creation and execution of recovery strategies for problem loans through negotiated modifications, forbearances, managed litigation, and collateral liquidation.

As a strategic leader, the Special Assets Manager leads a dynamic team of professionals who promote a risk culture that balances risk and reward across business activities. The team ensures fair and ethical business conduct.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Identify and minimize potential losses and maximize recoveries on all loan portfolios through analysis of individual credits, collection activities, workout action plans, and negotiation.
  • Manage workout/collections portfolio reviews and make recommendations for approvals as needed.
  • Oversee determination and reporting of risk classification and ratings for problem loans, reserves, and charge-offs.
  • Attend and participate in Loan Administration Committee meetings.
  • Work closely with credit professionals to identify and mitigate problem assets.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategy and programs; manage and monitor significant portfolio risks.
  • Prepare reports for and lead the Special Assets Committee meeting on a monthly basis.
  • Balance business needs with potential risks to mitigate loss and make recommendations to borrowers as appropriate.
  • Coordinate legal counsel throughout various litigation matters.
  • Oversee OREO and note sales to minimize cost and maximize recovery to the bank in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manage a team of special asset professionals located throughout the First Mid Bancshares, Inc. footprint.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the team member life cycle, including recruitment, performance, and development.

This role requires high levels of analytical skills, commercial lending knowledge, and interpersonal skills to interact with internal and external customers in a professional manner.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Strategic leadership skills to develop and implement effective special assets management strategies.

  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills to coordinate legal counsel throughout litigation matters.
  • Ability to manage a team of special asset professionals and oversee their life cycle.
