UK Payroll Expert

Our firm is seeking a dedicated Accountant Professional to take ownership of a portfolio of UK clients and become a key player in our finance function.
This role requires a meticulous accountant with a strong command of UK payroll, able to engage directly with clients and handle HMRC enquiries. The successful candidate will be responsible for end-to-end monthly UK payroll processing for multiple client entities, ensuring absolute accuracy and compliance with UK legislation.
About the RoleThe ideal candidate will have solid knowledge of statutory payments and ability to apply them correctly. They will also calculate, deduct, and submit all relevant UK payroll taxes (PAYE) and National Insurance contributions accurately and on time.
Key Responsibilities- Process end-to-end monthly UK payroll for multiple client entities.
- Demonstrate solid knowledge of statutory payments (SMP, SPP, SSP, etc.) and ensure their correct application.
- Calculate, deduct, and submit all relevant UK payroll taxes (PAYE) and National Insurance contributions accurately and on time.
- Administer and manage workplace pension schemes (auto-enrolment), including assessments, declarations of compliance, and submissions.
- Liaise directly with pension regulators and providers.
- Deal directly with HMRC regarding client enquiries, resolutions, and submissions.
- Engage directly with clients to address queries, provide solutions, and offer proactive payroll advice.
- Reconcile payroll accounts and prepare related journal entries.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure all payroll data is up-to-date.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- At least 2+ years of proven experience processing UK payroll from outside the UK.
- In-depth knowledge of UK payroll legislation, taxes, and statutory payments.
- Direct experience with UK pension schemes, including auto-enrolment duties and dealing with providers/regulators.
- Proven experience in directly dealing with HMRC on behalf of clients.
- Exceptional client engagement skills with confidence to handle enquiries and problem-solve effectively.
- A detail-oriented mindset with commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent communication skills in English (both written and verbal).
- Proficiency in major payroll software like Sage, Xero, Brightpay (especially Payroll Manager).
