Product Development Specialist Job Description

As a Product Development Specialist, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing product strategies that drive business growth and profitability.

  • You will be responsible for working closely with cross-functional teams to plan product ranges, prepare sales and stock plans in conjunction with buyers, and to develop pricing strategies that maximise profits.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential to liaise with buyers, analysts, stores, suppliers and distributors, and to maintain a comprehensive library of appropriate data.

Your responsibilities will include producing layout plans for stores, forecasting profits and sales, and optimising the sales volume and profitability of designated product areas.

Other key tasks include controlling stock levels based on forecasts for the season, using specialist computer software to handle sales statistics, produce sales projections and present spreadsheets and graphs, and analysing every aspect of bestsellers and monitoring slow sellers.

Ongoing analysis includes gathering information on customers' reactions to products, making financial presentations to senior managers, and accompanying buyers on visits to manufacturers to appreciate production processes.

A strong understanding of production processes and supply chain management is required, as well as the ability to manage junior staff and provide training and supervision where necessary.

  • Meeting with suppliers and managing the distribution of stock, by negotiating cost prices, ordering stock, agreeing timescales and delivery dates.
  • Identifying production and supply difficulties and dealing with any problems or delays as they arise.
  • Managing, training and supervising junior staff.
