A senior consultant specialist is responsible for overseeing the operations of complex systems, including IBM i (AS/400) and IBM Z (Mainframe). This requires ensuring high availability and performance of critical business applications, monitoring alert consoles, and reviewing and improving IPL, Role Swaps, system recycles, and subsystem handling.
Effective incident management is critical to success in this role. This includes leading incident resolution, analyzing recurring issues, implementing permanent fixes, and driving proactive problem management. The ideal candidate should have experience with ITIL best practices for incident, problem, and change management.
The role also involves automating and optimizing processes, identifying and implementing automation solutions to reduce manual interventions, and working with engineering teams to integrate alert management and self-healing automation.
In addition to technical skills, a senior consultant specialist must be able to lead and develop a team of IBM i and IBM Z administrators/operators across multiple shifts. This includes conducting weekly/monthly performance reviews, tracking team productivity, and providing coaching. Mentoring junior team members and building succession plans are also important responsibilities.
Security and compliance are also key aspects of this role. Ensuring adherence to security policies and regulatory guidelines (e.g., SOX, GDPR), implementing access control measures to prevent unauthorized system changes, and working with audit teams to address compliance gaps are all essential duties.
Stakeholder and vendor management are also important aspects of this role. Liaising with business teams, IT infrastructure, application teams, and third-party vendors, as well as participating in technical discussions with senior IT leadership are critical tasks.
