Purpose of the APW

The purpose of this assignment is to provide technical assistance for the baseline assessment for WHO's SRHR competency framework implementation through pre-service training.

Background

Pakistan is the fifth most populous country in the world with 60 percent youth population under aged 24 year with 3.55% fertility rates. Despite Government and private sector efforts, sexual and reproductive health services are scarce for the population, particularly females and adolescent girls in the country.

Ensuring high quality sexual reproductive health services is possible only if the pre-service curricula are updated according to the most recent WHO guidelines and recommendations. WHO country office in collaboration with the HQ and EMRO has been supporting the Government's efforts for improvement of SRH service in the country. In the same context, WHO collaborated with educational institutions to update the pre-service training curriculum of medical, nursing and public health specialities to bring the same in alignment with the recent WHO guidelines and recommendations. This will improve the use of best practices and quality of SRH service delivery by healthcare & public health professionals. With this background, WHO would like to engage an institution to undertake baseline assessment for documenting the experience of WHO's SRHR competency framework implementation through pre-service training.

Scope of work:The institution will be required to undertake a mixed-methods study employing a quasi-experimental, pre-post design with an embedded qualitative evaluation in addition to faculty development training workshops. This assignment requires the following task to be completed.

• Conduct a comprehensive gap analysis of current SRHR content within the undergraduate medical curriculum, in collaboration with the teaching faculty of the Foundation medical college/nursing school.
• Convene a panel of experts in SRHR and medical education based at the institution to review the WHO's SRHR competency framework adapted and contextualized the content to reflect the sociocultural, legal, and health system realities of Pakistan.
• Develop measurable learning outcomes and standardized instructional materials for implementation in the respective institution.
• Organize faculty training workshops to enhance pedagogical and content-specific competencies in SRHR for rolling out the adapted WHO's SRHR competency framework.
• Development of a data collection tool to measure the improvement in SRHR competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes) among medical/nursing/public health students, as measured by changes in pre- and post-test scores using a validated assessment tool.
• Administer the structured baseline tool to assess knowledge, skills and attitudes and competencies among participating medical students.
• To qualitatively explore faculty experiences, implementation challenges, and emergent innovations prior to curriculum change.
• Faculty satisfaction, instructional challenges, and perceptions of curriculum relevance and feasibility and identification of novel pedagogical strategies and contextual factors influencing implementation success prior to the implementation of the revised curriculum. Qualitative: Semi-structured interview and focus group guides for faculty and stakeholders.
• Integrate the adapted competency based SRHR content into the relevant undergraduate modules.
• Report of the activities conducted and the results of the pre-test to be shared at the end of the activity.

3. Qualifications and Expertise:

Qualifications required:

Education institution with core team including individuals with PhD/master's degree in medicine/nursing/midwifery or Public Health or medical education. Demonstrable knowledge of medical/nursing practices in reproductive and maternal health.

Faculty Experience required:

• At least ten years' work experience in reproductive and maternal health
• At least 5 years' experience of medical education in Pakistan or other countries
• Excellent interpersonal, oral communication, writing and documentation skills
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and to work effectively under pressure
• Computer skills

Faculty Language requirements:

Fluent in English (reading, speaking and writing)

Place of assignment

The selected candidate will be based in Islamabad.
