Overview

An Import Officer has a wide range of duties that deal with each step of the shipping process. Responsibilities include tracking shipments and communicating with clients about the package's progress, coordinating shipping with customs agents for clearance on overseas deliveries, handling quotes from prospective shippers and dealing with claims with insurance companies if shipment problems occur, and providing efficient delivery logistics through data management. Import Officers fill out import-export documentation, compile carrier and route assignments, compute international fees for each shipment, and keep track of shipment payments and quotas. Much of this work is done using automated systems that can identify shipments, collect data and register packages with government agencies.

Responsibilities
  • Track shipments and communicate with clients about their package progress.
  • Coordinate shipping with customs agents for clearance on overseas deliveries.
  • Handle quotes from prospective shippers and manage claims with insurance companies if shipment problems occur.
  • Provide efficient delivery logistics through data management.
  • Fill out import-export documentation, compile carrier and route assignments, compute international fees, and track shipment payments and quotas.

Qualifications
  • Information Technology and Services experience (context indicates sector/location).
  • Export manager role described with responsibility for overseeing the export process and ensuring compliance with domestic and foreign customs laws.
  • Employers require a four-year degree.
  • Typically at least four years of related professional experience for management-level positions.
