Overview

The Medical Doctor (National) at International Medical Corps is responsible for overall patient care, including promotion of health and safety. The role involves conducting thorough triage, history taking, physical examinations, essential laboratory/radiology investigations, diagnoses, treatment, and referrals, as well as educating patients and their caregivers.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality clinical care to patients based on history, physical examination, available laboratory and imaging tests, and formulary for treatment of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Conduct daily rounds on patients as assigned, initiate case discussions, monitor and document patient progress, and ensure proper handover when physicians' responsibilities are assigned to an inpatient facility.
  • Advise on further testing and/or advanced care requirements and initiate the referral process.
  • Initiate regular case discussions as part of hands-on training.
  • Identify gaps in staff training and provide didactic and/or hands-on training as needed.
  • Advocate for necessary staff training and provide the required training.
  • Utilize data collection tools and provide training to other staff as needed.
  • Collect and analyze medical service data to improve quality of care for patients and services.
  • Ensure standard precautions of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures are implemented and adhered to as per MoH and international standards.
  • Participate in a 24-hour health service delivery system at the clinic/facility/hospital as scheduled.
  • Adhere to international protocols and standards related to patient assessment, diagnostic processes, and medical prescription of drugs.
  • Manage and supervise other clinical staff as directed by the supervisor; participate in hiring processes if needed.
  • Provide health education to patients and community members regarding diagnoses, healthy diets, physical activity, hygiene, and disease prevention (e.g., vaccination, smoking cessation).
  • Adhere to administrative directives regarding schedules, record keeping, patient communications, and restocking of essential drugs, consumables, and other medical supplies.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Immediately report any violation of the IMC Code of Conduct, including patient safeguarding.
  • Conduct outreach health services as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Typically, a medical degree (primary care physician) with a valid license to practice and board certified or equivalent (board eligible).
  • Typically, 2+ years of relevant clinical work, post-graduate medical experience after medical school; work in low-resource settings preferred.
  • Experience in programs related to primary health care, maternal and child health, reproductive health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as emergency/outbreak response preferable.
  • Previous NGO experience preferable.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong self-motivation and ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions.
  • Flexibility and ability to cope with stressful situations.
  • Able to work effectively with diverse personalities and cultures.
