Assistant Professor (Environmental Sciences), Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Curriculum Development: design and deliver undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to environmental sciences, with a focus on laboratory-based learning. This may include topics such as environmental chemistry, ecology, microbiology, pollution monitoring, and environmental analysis techniques.
  • Research: Conducting original research in the field is essential. This might involve investigating environmental phenomena, developing new analytical methods, or assessing the impacts of pollutants on ecosystems. Collaborating with other faculty members, students, and external partners could be integral to your research efforts.
  • Mentoring and Advising: Guiding and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in their academic and research pursuits is a key aspect of the role. This involves advising students on coursework, research projects, and career paths, as well as providing support and guidance for their professional development.
  • Grant Writing and Fundraising: Seeking external funding to support research endeavors is necessary. This entails writing grant proposals to secure funding from government agencies, private foundations, or industry partners. Additionally, cultivating relationships with potential donors and stakeholders may be part of your responsibilities.
  • Publishing and Dissemination: Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals is crucial for advancing knowledge in the field and establishing your reputation as a scholar. Presenting work at conferences and seminars allows scientists to share their findings with the scientific community and receive feedback from peers.
  • Service and Collaboration: Engaging in service activities within the academic institution, such as serving on committees or participating in departmental initiatives, is expected. Additionally, collaborating with other departments, research centers, and external organizations can enrich research and teaching endeavors.
  • Staying Current: Keeping abreast of the latest developments in environmental sciences, laboratory techniques, and educational methodologies is important for maintaining the quality and relevance of your teaching and research activities.
Requirements
  • PhD in a relevant field (environmental anthropology, environmental geography, biology, chemistry, physics, or cognate discipline)
  • 3-5 years Teaching experience at undergraduate level (including lectures, small group tutorials, course convening)
  • Experience of organizing workshops, seminars, and public talks
  • Publications in international journals relevant for social development studies (commensurate with career status)
  • Experience of working with development practitioners

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Mastery of basic office IT tools (word processors, spreadsheets, calendars)
  • Ability to teach research methods and subjects related to disciplinary expertise
  • Commitment to interdisciplinarity
  • Maintain collegial working environments
  • Good Communication and writing skills
  • Effective Interpersonal skills
