Overview

Assistant, WASH - Hygiene Promotion role at International Medical Corps. The primary function is to ensure the delivery of WASH Hygiene promotion and community mobilization activities in coordination with the Senior Officer WASH or WASH Manager or WASH Coordinator.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct rapid needs assessments and household-level assessments; support transition of identified needs into activity plans and budgets.
  • Deliver the implementation of the aims and objectives of the WASH response program under guidance of the WASH Coordinator/Manager and strategy.
  • Support development of concept papers, letters of intent, proposals, and budgets for assigned WASH areas.
  • Collaborate with other actors to deliver hygiene promotion programs suited to local contexts (communities, health facilities, camps, schools) and acceptable to beneficiaries.
  • Mobilize the community on behavior change related to hygiene practices; identify appropriate messages for the target population.
  • Work with community volunteers to identify locations/sites for WASH infrastructures and coordinate with CHVs to identify informal settlements in host communities.
  • Conduct focus group discussions and deliver clear messages on good hygiene practices.
  • Organize training sessions and facilitate activities in health facilities, IDP camps, schools, and host communities; determine necessary materials for campaigns/activities.
  • Train and monitor Community Hygiene Volunteer (CHV) promoters; collect data for CHV beneficiaries and input beneficiary data into spreadsheets for NFI kit distribution; oversee distribution of WASH items.
  • Train CHVs on hygiene promotion sessions and logging; collect monthly CHV logs and certify completed work; report progress to supervisor.
  • Participate in hygiene campaigns and drama shows in schools, community and IDP camps; document health-related data and activity records; report challenges and successes to IMC for follow-up.
  • Collect water samples when assigned and conduct quality tests; record results.
  • Complete daily reports on CHV evaluation, water testing, and NFI distribution; coordinate with M&E for data inputs for impact analysis and contribute to donor, internal, and MEAL reports.
  • Ensure timely reporting of Hygiene Promotion activities to supervisor/WASH Officer.
Information and Coordination
  • Provide regular updates and technical guidance to the WASH Coordinator/Manager on progress, priorities, and challenges—verbally and in writing.
  • Represent International Medical Corps as assigned in governmental and non-governmental groups as needed and agreed with the supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum bachelor's degree in social sciences or relevant WASH specialization.
  • At least one year of experience implementing hygiene promotion systems in IDPs, refugee, and migrant contexts.
  • Two years of experience supervising and interacting with international staff, partners, and donors.
  • Field experience managing national water, sanitation, and hygiene programs in complex humanitarian settings, including emergencies.
  • Experience in national emergency and early recovery phases, including assessing and delivering hygiene promotion interventions in humanitarian and development contexts.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and propose positive solutions; strong understanding of the WASH sector and its software and hardware components.
  • Competent in using Windows and other software; strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Awareness of gender-related challenges within beneficiary groups.
