The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Aga Khan University is a dynamic academic center which serves the diagnostic needs of the country through its clinical laboratory services that spreads across Pakistan. AKUH's Clinical Laboratory is College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited and caters to the need of the entire country through its tertiary lab at the main campus and 300+ specimen collection units and 13 stat labs across Pakistan. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine consists of five major sections namely Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. Each section is academically driven and is highly engaged in research and undergraduate, postgraduate teaching and training.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible to:

  • supervise the technical and administrative activities of the assigned Clinical Laboratory's section daily through visual inspection to ensure smooth operations.
  • assign various duties and responsibilities among the staff of the department through adequate distribution of workload and by making monthly duty rota to ensure reports are prepared on time.
  • make duty rota and has authority to approve staff over time.
  • handle departmental staffing matters such as attendance, discipline, and counselling through random checks and as and when required to ensure that the Laboratory and institutional policies are implemented regularly.
  • ensure service expansion / product development to improve patient care by commissioning new tests.
  • encourage staff to keep abreast of the latest developments by arranging monthly departmental lectures, circulating selected articles journals, and attending seminars / workshop as and when available to keep staff knowledge updated.
  • implement safety regulations within the assigned section according to the safety manual through weekly random checks and personal observation to ensure safety of staff workers & visitors.
  • update the sectional policies & procedures manual as per protocols.
  • recruit or evaluate staff annually/semi-annually as per institutional Policy.
  • ensure compliance with CAP / JCIA standards by conducting regular audits.
Requirements

You should have:

  • a Bachelor's degree in Biological Science (4 years Program) or MSc.
  • 8-10 years of related experience or 3-4 years of comparable supervisory experience within AKU 
  • thorough knowledge of Laboratory testing procedures
  • knowledge of latest developments in Medical Technology field
  • good knowledge of employee relations techniques
  • administrative capabilities
  • ability to work under pressure
