- They meet patient goals and needs and provide quality care by conducting pulmonary function tests, assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results, and determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.
- The specialist helps patients accomplish their treatment plan and supports life by administering inhalants, operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators.
- They administer respiratory therapy treatments by performing drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
- The specialist directs treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants.
- Evaluating effects of respiratory therapy treatment plans is a key responsibility, involving observing, noting and evaluating patient progress and recommending adjustments and modifications.
- Discharge planning is completed by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare workers; contributing to patient care conferences.
- The specialist assures continuation of the therapeutic plan following discharge by designing home exercise programs and instructing patients, families and caregivers in home exercise programs.
- Recommendations for assistive equipment and outpatient or home health follow-up programs are made.
- Patient care services are documented by charting in patient and department records.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality and protecting hospital operations is crucial.
- A safe and clean working environment is maintained by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
- Infection-control policies and protocols are adhered to protect patients and employees.
- The specialist develops respiratory therapy staff by providing information and developing and conducting in-service training programs.
