• The Breathing Disorder Specialist plays a crucial role in restoring patient's pulmonary function, alleviating pain, and supporting life through medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
• Meeting patient goals and needs is achieved by conducting pulmonary function tests, assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results, and determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.
• Helping patients accomplish their treatment plan and supporting life involves administering inhalants, operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators.
• Administering respiratory therapy treatments requires performing drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
• Supervising treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants is also an important aspect of this role.
• Evaluating the effectiveness of respiratory therapy treatment plans involves observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress and recommending adjustments and modifications.
• Collaboration with healthcare professionals contributes to successful discharge planning and patient care conferences.
• Ensuring continuation of the therapeutic plan following discharge involves designing home exercise programs and instructing patients, families, and caregivers.
• Recommendations for assistive equipment and outpatient or home health follow-up programs are made.
• Patient care services are carefully documented by charting in patient and department records.
• Maintaining patient trust and protecting hospital operations is paramount.
• A safe and clean working environment is maintained by adhering to established procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Protecting patients and employees from infection requires adherence to infection-control policies and protocols.
• Developing respiratory therapy staff through education and training is an ongoing responsibility.
