Lung Function Therapist

  • Lung Function Therapists play a vital role in restoring patient's pulmonary function, alleviating pain, and supporting life through medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
  • Meeting patient goals and needs is achieved by conducting pulmonary function tests, assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results, and determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.
  • Supporting patients in accomplishing their treatment plan and sustaining life involves administering inhalants, operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators.
  • Administering respiratory therapy treatments requires performing drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
  • Supervising treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants is also an essential aspect of this role.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of respiratory therapy treatment plans involves observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress and recommending adjustments and modifications.
  • Collaboration with healthcare professionals contributes to successful discharge planning and patient care conferences.
  • Continuation of the therapeutic plan following discharge involves designing home exercise programs and instructing patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Recommendations for assistive equipment and outpatient or home health follow-up programs are also provided.
  • Patient care services are accurately documented by charting in patient and department records.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and protecting hospital integrity is fundamental.
  • A safe and clean working environment is ensured by adhering to established procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Adhering to infection-control policies and protocols protects patients and employees.
  • Developing respiratory therapy staff through education and training is an ongoing responsibility.
