About the Role

The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) is responsible for providing strategic leadership in planning, implementing, and optimizing medical information technology systems to enhance patient care, education, research, and clinical information technology.

Key responsibilities include evaluating and implementing electronic health record (EHR) systems, ensuring effective user support and education, driving continuous improvement, establishing guidelines and policies, and monitoring new technology opportunities.

  • Evaluate and Implement EHR Systems
    • Evaluate the impact of IT services on clinical processes;
    • Promote technology adoption, improve care quality, and create efficiencies;
    • Develop and implement strategic plans for clinical information technology systems;
    • Lead the planning and implementation phases of EHR programmes;
  • Ensure Effective User Support and Education
    • Continuously educate and support physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals on EHR implementation and use;
    • Integrate patient care processes in EHR systems and focus on advanced technology solutions;
    • Understand and address requirements and priorities of healthcare professionals through engagement;
    • Oversight data quality, integrity, and security;
    • Sustain protocols for data use in quality assurance and research;
  • Drive Continuous Improvement
    • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety committees to design systems supporting patient care and quality initiatives;
    • Oversee quality of data and information provided by the Quality Department;
    • Advise AKHS regions on data use when required;
    • Engage with patient care providers through clinical advisory committees;
    • Design and evaluate data collection for clinical purposes;
    • Provide expertise for clinical research activities;
  • Establish Guidelines and Policies
    • Collaborate with staff to develop evidence-based automated clinical guidelines;
    • Assist clinical leadership groups in forming clinical content and protocols;
  • Monitor New Technology Opportunities
    • Review clinical information technology trends and assist senior leadership in developing strategic plans;
    • Attend health informatics meetings and pursue continuing education;
    • Mentor clinicians interested in Clinical/Health Informatics.
