The purpose of this position is to protect the company's interests in lawsuits filed or defended by the company, as well as pre-litigation processes and advising on ways to avoid litigation in a court of law.

This role involves:

  • Studying amendments to laws, rules, and regulations made by federal, provincial, and other statutory bodies.
  • Evaluating the probable effect on company operations or relations with others and advising accordingly.
  • Anticipating and proactively developing strategies to address changes in regulatory requirements and public policy.
  • Reviewing drafts of impending legislation, evaluating its impact, and advising management on possible steps to protect the company's interests.
  • Collecting necessary documents related to litigation matters, following up on lawsuits, and finalizing other matters requiring input from the Legal department.
  • Assisting in developing a considered legal view on referred issues/cases/queries primarily related to litigation matters based on existing laws, rules, regulations, and research.
  • Providing details of cases along with supporting documents to external counsel and sharing the company's legal perspective.
  • Identifying potential law firms/counsel of repute and relevant specialization for litigation purposes.
  • Assessing the importance of lawsuits and suggesting suitability of various legal counsel for representing the company.
  • Assisting in preparing and executing 'Vakalatnama' for appointing legal counsel.
  • Coordinating with external counsel to initiate and follow up on lawsuits filed by the company or in suits where the company is a respondent.
  • Coordinating with external counsel to develop and review draft briefs, replies, para-wise comments, opinions, and supporting papers.
  • Taking steps to ensure the company is properly represented at hearings and that proceedings are properly documented and presented for review.
  • Participating in preparing, vetting, publishing, and serving legal notices in various matters.
  • Seeking feedback and clarification from stakeholders and relevant departments as needed.
  • Vetting referred legal documents and drafts, providing paragraph-wise input, and conducting risk analysis.
  • Representing the company's point of view before arbitrators or in discussions relating to settlement of disputes out of court.
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with officials of various courts.
  • Attending to litigation-related matters, reporting progress, and representing the company during court hearings as needed.
  • Providing updates on ongoing cases to members of the Public Accounts Committee.
  • Preparing status reports on lawsuits and ensuring effective steps are taken to safeguard the company's interests.
  • Generating periodic reports on potential legal and litigation risks.
  • Studying reports on decisions taken by superior courts and evaluating their impact on company operations and pending lawsuits.
  • Advising management on changes or amendments in laws and rules, along with applicable implications.
  • Guiding and supporting junior legal staff in developing initial drafts/replies/pleadings and reviewing them accordingly.
  • Identifying and assessing risks under management/ownership.
  • Developing and implementing risk response strategies for risks under management.
  • Monitoring risks and response strategies under management.
  • Ensuring accuracy and timeliness of information provided for risk reporting.
