Pulmonary Rehabilitation Therapist

• This role involves restoring patient's pulmonary function, alleviating pain, and supporting life through the planning and administration of medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
• Pulmonary Rehabilitation Therapists meet patient goals and needs by conducting pulmonary function tests, assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results, and determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.
• Assisting patients in accomplishing their treatment plan and supporting life is essential, which includes administering inhalants, operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators.
• Providing respiratory therapy treatments involves performing drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
• Directing treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants is also part of this role.
• Evaluating the effectiveness of respiratory therapy treatment plans requires observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress and recommending adjustments and modifications.
• Collaboration with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare workers contributes to successful discharge planning and patient care conferences.
• Designing home exercise programs and instructing patients, families, and caregivers ensures continuation of the therapeutic plan following discharge.
• Recommendations for assistive equipment and outpatient or home health follow-up programs are also provided.
• Patient care services are thoroughly documented by charting in patient and department records.
• Maintaining patient confidentiality and upholding hospital integrity is critical.
• Ensuring a safe and clean working environment is achieved by adhering to established procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Protecting patients and employees from infection requires strict adherence to infection-control policies and protocols.
• Developing respiratory therapy staff through education and training is an ongoing responsibility.
