OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To achieve cessation of transmission of Polio from Pakistan by the year 2015 through routine and supplementary immunization and high quality AFP surveillance system. In addition, to reduce morbidity of other EPI target diseases

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent will perform the following duties:1. Organize and supervise elements of the polio programme in the province and specially:a. Strategic planning of polio eradication in the province;b. Coordinate, direct and monitor the work of WHO staff and non staff working for polio in the province;c. Prepare budget requirements and oversee expenditure for polio eradication activities;d. Develop and participate in regular evaluation of the programme;e. Ensure follow up of the implementation of the various elements of the National Emergency Action Plan for Polio eradication (NEAP) and the recommendations of technical bodies (TAG).2. Lead supplementary immunization activities and collaborate with the district and provincial health authorities to coordinate routine immunization activities, namelya. Develop micro-plans for implementation of Reaching Every Districts (RED) approach and ensure their proper implementation;b. Coordinate with partners on activities related to routine immunization and ensure community participation;c. Supervise preparations, implementation and monitoring of supplementary immunization activities including micro-planning, training, supervision and monitoring;d. Timely analysis of data and its use for corrective action. 3. Lead AFP surveillance activities to ensure achievement/maintenance of certification standards, mainly:a. Plan and ensure proper implementation of active surveillance and routine reporting;b. Provide and implement training and supervision of surveillance staff;c. Oversee the organization of advocacy/orientation meetings for health care providers;d. Ensure a thorough case investigation, follow-up and classification;e. Regular analysis of surveillance data and monitoring indicators.4. Advise provincial health authorities on various aspects of polio eradication in the province.5. Train and build national capacity in the area of assignment.6. Liaise with different EPI/PEI (Polio Eradication Initiative) partners and enlist continued commitment of national local authorities to stated goals.7. Oversee activities of national staff recruited by WHO to support Polio eradication activities.Submit monthly reports to reflect progress, constraints and proposed actions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in Medicine and Masters degree in public health (preferably in epidiomology or child health).

Experience

Essential: At least 7 years of relevant experience combined at the national and international levels in programme management, planning and implementation of EPI related activities
Desirable: Experience in NGOs, UN agencies in immunization related areas

Skills

In depth knowledge of epidemiology. Ability to process, analyze and interpret epidemiological surveillance data. Familiarity with health problems in the area

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 84,672 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2455 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
