The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is the leading unit of its type in Pakistan, recognized regionally and internationally for the relevance, quality, and extent of its work in support of public health and the development of primary health care systems. It comprises of five major operational sections: Epidemiology & biostatistics, Health policy & management, Population & reproductive health, Environmental health & climate change, and Non-communicable diseases & mental health.

The Brick-Kiln Workers' Health and Safety study aims to gain a better understanding of the health and safety brick kiln workers in Pakistan, particularly Sindh province. In this study we will assess brick kiln workers current living and working conditions, experiences as a brick-kiln worker including recruitment and hiring practices, and occupational health and safety. We have designed an intervention to improve the working conditions of brick kiln workers in Sindh.

This is a grant-funded contractual position. 

You will be responsible to:

• actively engage in research, with special emphasis on collaborative projects, particularly related to climate change, environmental and occupational health & injuries
• carry out major tasks related to brick kiln intervention study in the field (province of Sindh) including designing, implementation, evaluation and monitoring activites
• develop proposal and submit for extramural funding under supervision of senior faculty and in collaboration with international agencies develop independent research programmes
• write articles independently on assigned projects, under the supervision of senior faculty, and pursue publication of the same in professional journals
• participate in research studies with senior colleagues including designing instruments, collecting, analysing & compiling data
• co-author research papers with supervisor and /or other faculty members, where needed
• serve as a member on professional associations
• conduct and participate in assigned meetings and committees, primarily at divisional / departmental level 
• participate / support in committee work to provide services to the University
• participate in continuing professional development programmes for self-development, and engage in other professional development activities to keep self-updated on current practices and trends in education development. This should be in consultation with supervisor/ mentor
• perform special academic/University service tasks assigned by the Chair, CHS
• contribute to curriculum review and innovation, including the use of IT to enhance learning & teaching, within and across discipline as assigned
• participate in national and international academic conferences / symposiums.

You should have:

• a Masters or equivalent degree in public health or other health professional degree 
• demonstrated professional accomplishment and evidence of successful performance in research in Public Health Related discipline particularly climate change environmental and occupational health
• good skills & knowledge & practices in Climate change, environmental and occupational health & Injuries
• experience in carrying out field based public health research studies and ready to undertake field based operations
• experience of working for research studies in the province of Sindh, Pakistan
• well versed knowledge of available statistical analysis software packages and limitations of each one of them
• well versed knowledge in proposal writing and submission process to international and national agencies
• sound knowledge of research methodologies and their applications in epidemiological studies
• ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with course participants
• good academic writing skills
• fluent in English & Urdu; ability to communicate in other regional languages would be an advantage
• proficiency in use of computer software packages
• good conceptual and analytical skills
• good planning & organisational skills 
• good interpersonal skills & ability to work in a team
• committed to learning, growth, and self-development.
