Academic Faculty Position: Assistant Professor, Social Studies

Job Description

The Institute seeks to appoint a highly skilled and accomplished academic specialist in Social Studies with a strong background in History, Pakistan Studies, Geography, Citizenship, or Development Studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising research dissertations, conducting independent and collaborative research aligned with Social Studies, writing and securing research grants, publishing high-quality research outputs, and offering short courses and workshops.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing, planning, and delivering courses for degree programs;
  • Supervising research dissertations for graduate and PhD students;
  • Conducting independent and collaborative research aligned with Social Studies;
  • Writing and securing research grants from internal and external funding sources;
  • Publishing high-quality research outputs, including monographs, edited books, journal articles, and book chapters;
  • Offering short courses, diplomas, and/or certificate programs through our Professional Development Centre;
  • Presenting research findings at national and international conferences;
  • Organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences periodically;
  • Providing consultancy services to national and international organizations within your areas of expertise;
  • Contributing to the Institute's inter-institutional initiatives, including collaborations with public institutions;
  • Participating actively as a member of AKU-IED and University-wide committees;
  • Leading, monitoring, evaluating, and implementing grant-funded projects;
  • Taking on leadership responsibilities in academic and research programs;
  • Mentoring junior faculty to support their teaching and research development;
  • Planning, reviewing, and revising academic courses and curricula;
  • Participating in student recruitment processes, admissions committees, and curriculum reviews;
  • Contributing to initiatives that promote interdisciplinary approaches to the Social Sciences in education.
Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Social Studies or a related field (preferably with a focus on History, Pakistan Studies, Geography, Citizenship, or Development Studies). Exceptional candidates with a master's degree and extensive experience in teaching and research may also be considered;
  • Strong track record of leading research projects, securing competitive grants, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Demonstrated expertise in mixed method research;
  • An academic background in one or more of the following: preferably History, Geography; Citizenship, Development Studies, or related disciplines;
  • Proficiency in designing and delivering courses in a blended learning mode;
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, and communication skills (oral and written);
  • Proven ability to work effectively within teams and diverse environments;
  • History of writing successful research and outreach proposals;
  • Evidence of academic or project leadership;
  • A commitment to professional growth and development in academia;
  • Proficiency in relevant computer software for research and teaching;
  • Experience in mentoring graduate students and junior faculty members;
  • Passion for addressing the social, historical, and developmental challenges within Pakistan's educational context;
