About the Role

We're hiring a Lead Backend Engineer to drive the core infrastructure and data layer of Metal. You'll own the backend stack end-to-end: designing APIs, scaling systems, defining architecture, managing reliability, and leading a small team of engineers.

This is a role for someone who thrives on solving tough technical problems, thinks in systems, and is excited to build at the intersection of product and infrastructure. As a Lead, everything is in your purview — performance, reliability, observability, data pipelines, job queues, architecture, and mentoring.

You'll help define what engineering excellence looks like, and work closely with the founders to scale a platform that thousands of startups will depend on.

What You'll Do

  • Own the backend architecture — from APIs to asynchronous workflows, from DB schema to queue design

  • Lead and mentor a small team of backend and data engineers

  • Make foundational decisions about tools, patterns, infrastructure, and scaling strategy

  • Collaborate tightly with product, design, and frontend teams to ship features that matter

  • Ensure reliability, performance, and observability across the stack

  • Drive cross-functional projects around data modeling, ingestion, and internal platform development

  • Contribute to backend coding and code reviews — we expect Leads to be excellent engineers first

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience, with 2+ years in a technical leadership role
    Deep expertise in and TypeScript (Python is a plus)

  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, SQS (or similar)

  • Experience with data-intensive products, batch or streaming pipelines, and asynchronous architecture

  • Excellent system design, debugging, and communication skills
    Track record of leading backend teams and setting architectural direction

Preferred

  • Experience with DBT and modern data stack tooling

  • Knowledge of distributed systems and event-driven architecture

  • Comfortable with observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Sentry, Datadog)

  • Exposure to full-stack environments and collaboration with frontend teams

  • Startup experience or building in fast-moving environments
