Summary of the role

The Internal Auditor, provides independent, objective assurance and advisory services to the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee. The role's primary function is to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the company's risk management, internal controls, and governance processes.

Key responsibilities

  • Risk-based audit planning:

Develop and implement a risk-based annual audit plan to review critical operations, which is then submitted to the Audit Committee for review and approval.
- Audit execution:

Perform full audit cycles, including reviewing and evaluating the company's internal control systems and procedures, assessing risks, and identifying areas of non-compliance with laws and regulations.
- Reporting:

Prepare and present reports that reflect the audit's findings, highlighting weaknesses, non-compliance, and other material issues to senior management and the Audit Committee. This includes documenting work plans, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Regulatory compliance:

Ensure the company's compliance with its internal policies, standards, and procedures, as well as the external laws and regulations, including directives from the SECP.
- Audit Committee liaison:

Act as the primary liaison with the Audit Committee, which includes managing meeting schedules, preparing documentation, and following up on corrective actions.
- Fraud detection:

Design and implement audit methodologies capable of detecting fraud and investigating instances of it.
- Operational improvement:

Provide objective advice and recommendations to management for strengthening internal controls, managing risks more effectively, and improving the efficiency of operations.
- Follow-up audits:

Conduct follow-up reviews to ensure that management has implemented corrective actions in response to prior audit recommendations.
- Coordination with external auditors:

Liaise with external auditors to coordinate activities and support their reviews. The internal auditor's reports are also provided to the external auditors for review.

Qualifications and skills

  • Education:

Degree in Chartered Accountancy (CA), ACCA, or ACMA are highly preferred or required.
- Experience:

Candidates need proven experience in internal auditing, with more senior roles requiring substantial experience in the field. Experience in the insurance or financial sector is often an advantage.
- Technical skills:

Proficiency with MS Office, accounting software, databases, and data analysis tools is essential. Knowledge of internal control frameworks (like COSO) and relevant auditing standards is also necessary.
- Soft skills:

Strong analytical skills, excellent written and verbal communication, integrity, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently are crucial.

Reporting structure

As mandated by the Code of Corporate Governance for Insurers, 2016, the Head of Internal Audit reports functionally to the Audit Committee to ensure independence and administrative reporting to the CEO.
