Job Description

A professional approach must be adopted with all patients, staff, and visitors.

MOs must work within their level of experience and competence, highlighting verbally and in writing all orders given by consultants and their team members while caring for patients in wards.

To provide medical cover, routine and emergency, during hours of duty and work in conjunction with other MOs to ensure a 24-hour service to the hospital.

To evaluate patients admitted to the ward by taking complete history, performing pertinent physical examinations, and documenting all findings in the HMIS.

To undertake morning, evening, and night ward rounds daily, preferably with a nursing staff member when available, ensuring patients are visited where appropriate.

To record patient progress and events in the HMIS system following ward rounds, examinations, communications, or procedures.

To seek advice from senior team members regarding patient health issues.

To receive handover reports from the previous RMO/SMO and attend ward areas within an hour of commencing duty in all shifts.

To provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for admitted patients.

To manage laboring patients and perform vaginal deliveries, including vacuum deliveries, according to residency/competency level and supervision.

To assess and manage patients in the ER. Complex antenatal cases should be evaluated by an SMO and endorsed by a specialist before admission or discharge decisions.

To undertake medical procedures advised by the Consultant within their experience and competence.

To liaise regularly with nursing staff to check on patient progress and see patients at their request, conducting examinations as needed.

To discuss discharge medications with patients and prepare discharge summaries.

All patient medical information must be kept confidential and respected at all levels; Medical Officers shall not disclose information.

To provide urgent medical attention and treatment to staff or visitors in case of accidents or sudden illness, in liaison with the medical team.

To remain on hospital premises during duty hours. If an RMO/SMO does not attend, the previous MO must stay until a replacement is found to ensure continuous coverage.

To comply with all hospital policies and procedures, especially those related to Health and Safety at Work.

To maintain effective interpersonal relationships with staff, patients, and their families.
