The Opportunity

We're seeking our first Head of Engineering to partner directly with the founders in building and scaling our technical capabilities. You'll have the unique opportunity to shape our engineering culture from the ground up, build a talented team, and directly impact our growth trajectory. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and business partnership.

What You'll Do

Build & Lead the Team

• Recruit, hire, and onboard talented engineers across various technical disciplines
• Mentor and develop team members, creating clear career progression paths
• Build a positive, innovative engineering culture focused on delivery and quality
• Structure the engineering department as we scale from [current size] to 20+ engineers
• Conduct performance reviews and manage team productivity

Drive Technical Excellence

• Make strategic decisions on technology stack and architecture
• Establish coding standards, review processes, and best practices
• Oversee technical quality across all client projects
• Lead adoption of AI tools and modern development practices
• Ensure scalable, maintainable solutions for clients

Partner with Business

• Collaborate with founders on project estimation and proposals
• Participate in client meetings to scope technical requirements
• Translate business needs into technical roadmaps
• Manage project timelines and resource allocation
• Provide technical input for pricing and contract negotiations

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with strong technical foundation
• 4+ years leading and managing engineering teams (50+ people)
• Proven track record of building and scaling engineering teams
• Experience with full-stack development and modern tech stacks
• Strong project management and organizational skills
• Experience creating technical proposals and estimates for clients
• Hands-on experience with AI/ML tools and their practical applications
• Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Java)
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP)
• Understanding of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
• Knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL databases
• Familiarity with microservices architecture
• Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies

Leadership Qualities:

• Comfortable in a hands-on role (coding, leadership initially)
• Experience in IT services/consulting environment preferred
• Ability to work directly with clients and understand business requirements
• Track record of successful technical hiring and team building
• Experience managing remote/distributed teams
• Comfortable with ambiguity and rapid growth
• Nice to Have:
  Experience in IT services or consulting companies
• Background in pre-sales engineering or solution architecture
• Experience with multiple industry verticals
• Knowledge of emerging technologies (blockchain, IoT, edge computing)
• Active participation in tech communities
