Job Title: Assistant Head Nurse

The role of Assistant Head Nurse is a vital one, playing a key part in the management of our unit.

Reporting directly to the Head Nurse, you will be responsible for supporting the leadership team with clinical nursing expertise.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strong professional nursing leadership to staff, enabling them to reach their potential and ensuring support within defined areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrating good clinical practice alongside the nursing team regularly, ensuring clinical credibility is maintained.
  • Providing clinical support and advice to patients, caregivers, families, and all grades of staff.
  • Maintaining high visibility within the clinical area, ensuring patients/visitors, staff, and the multidisciplinary team have access at all times.
  • Managing and evaluating changes that lead to better practice and higher standards of care.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting, retaining, and developing the nursing team.
  • Monitoring performance indicators for patient care quality and reporting monthly to HN/AM Nursing.
  • Ensuring effective and efficient use of all resources.
  • Empowering nurses to take on a wider range of clinical roles and responsibilities.
  • Handling effective rostering, including developing an electronic rostering system.
  • Ensuring a safe and appropriate skill mix is provided 24/7.
  • Designing and developing clinical roles to meet increasingly complex patient needs.
  • Monitoring and managing staff sickness and absence; identifying and managing stress symptoms.
  • Developing and establishing an effective work organization system within the clinical area with appropriate authority and autonomy.
  • Safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of all patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Promoting effective communication within the clinical team and representing the nursing department at meetings.
  • Creating and maintaining professional, supportive relationships with staff and other departments.

In terms of education, you will be expected to:

  • Ensure an effective learning environment on the ward/unit at all times.
  • Work closely with the Clinical Nurse Instructor to meet staff training and education needs.
  • Contribute to teaching within the clinical environment.
  • Assist in auditing and assessing practice to monitor service quality and care provided to patients and relatives.

Clinical governance is also a critical aspect of this role, including:

  • Implementing all nursing and hospital policies within the unit.
  • Maintaining electronic care records in accordance with standards.
  • Ensuring medications, including controlled drugs, are ordered, prepared, administered, and disposed of per protocols.
  • Safeguarding equipment and liaising with the Head Nurse regarding remedial actions following defects or damages.
  • Ensuring all health and safety requirements are met; reporting accidents and incidents as per policies.
  • Taking responsibility for personal professional development and acting as a role model.
  • Participating in the appraisal system.
  • Being aware of professional accountability and acting within hospital policies at all times.
