About the Role

We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to help scale the infrastructure and data systems that power Metal. You'll be responsible for designing and building performant APIs, asynchronous workflows, and data-rich backend services — all while operating with a high degree of ownership.

This is a role for someone who thrives in high-performance environments, takes initiative to solve big problems, and is ready to shape the architecture and quality standards of a growing backend codebase. You'll work closely with the founders, product, and frontend teams to ship features that matter — fast and clean.

What You'll Do

  • Build, scale, and maintain backend systems in , TypeScript, and Python

  • Design APIs, jobs, and queues for real-time and async data workflows

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver backend support for new product features

  • Own performance, reliability, and observability for your services

  • Write clean, testable code and participate in high-quality code reviews

  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve architecture, speed, and developer experience

  • Help evolve internal engineering standards and technical direction

What We're Looking ForNon-Negotiable Qualities

  • Exceptional Technical Ability: You've shipped production backend systems and are confident in system design and debugging

  • Professionalism & Drive: You show up on time, own outcomes, communicate proactively, and bring a sense of urgency to your work.

  • Intellectual Curiosity & Learning Capacity: You take initiative to understand the "why," ask hard questions, and build strong product intuition over time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience

  • Proficient in and TypeScript (Python is a plus)

  • Strong understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)

  • Experience with tools like Redis, Docker, SQS, or other async/job queue infrastructure

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills

  • Experience balancing speed and quality in fast-moving environments

Preferred

  • Experience with DBT or modern data tooling

  • Exposure to distributed systems and event-driven architectures

  • Comfortable debugging performance issues across the stack

  • Experience working with frontend and product teams in a tightly integrated environment
