Head of Digital Publishing

About the Role

is a newly launched digital news publication, and we're looking for an exceptional, multi-talented individual to be our founding Head of Digital Publishing & Growth. This is a unique opportunity to own the strategy and execution for every aspect of our online presence, from editorial content and technical health to monetization and audience growth. We're seeking a driven professional with a proven track record of building and scaling a news brand from the ground up.

Responsibilities

Content & Editorial Leadership

• Journalism & Curation: Select and curate high-quality, relevant news and articles to build a credible and trustworthy news brand.
• Google News & News Venue Management: Own the process of getting verified and listed on major news platforms like Google News and Apple News. This includes ensuring all content adheres to journalistic standards and platform-specific guidelines.
• Content Strategy: Develop and execute an editorial calendar that balances breaking news with original content, managing content pulling and pushing across various channels.

Monetization & Business Development

• Ad Monetization: Manage and optimize all revenue streams, including Google AdSense and other programmatic advertising. Strategically place ads to maximize revenue without compromising user experience.
• Affiliate & Sponsorships: Identify, secure, and manage affiliate marketing partnerships. Actively seek out and build relationships with advertisers for sponsored content and direct ad placements.
• Revenue Growth: Develop and implement strategies to convert traffic into "clickers or buyers," continuously analyzing data to maximize profitability.

SEO & Traffic Generation

• News-Specific SEO: Implement a comprehensive SEO strategy with a focus on news. This includes optimizing for freshness, timeliness, and utilizing structured data (e.g., NewsArticle schema) to increase visibility in search results.
• Technical SEO: Oversee the creation and regular submission of XML sitemaps, including a dedicated Google News sitemap, to ensure content is indexed quickly.
• Traffic Diversification: Identify and execute other ways to generate quality traffic, such as social media marketing, content syndication, and email newsletters.

Website Administration & Optimization

• Technical Health: Perform regular site health checks to ensure fast performance, security, and a seamless user experience.
• Plugin Management: Manage, audit, and optimize a running set of 20-30 plugins and subscriptions. This includes ensuring they are updated, configured correctly, and do not cause performance issues or conflicts.

Candidate Requirements

• Proven Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, with a clear and demonstrable track record of successfully growing a digital news publication.
• Journalistic Background: A solid understanding of journalistic principles and a keen eye for compelling, high-quality content.
• Monetization Expertise: Hands-on, practical experience with Google AdSense, affiliate marketing, and securing sponsored content deals.
• Technical Skills: Deep familiarity with WordPress (or similar CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Search Console).
• Entrepreneurial Mindset: A proactive, self-starting attitude with a strong sense of ownership. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, startup environment and be eager to build something from the ground up.

Work Commitment

• Availability: Due to the 24/7 nature of the news cycle and the demands of building a publication from scratch, this role requires a high level of dedication and availability. The successful candidate must be prepared to work almost 7 days a week to monitor publication, traffic, clicks, and ensure the continuous health and growth of the site. This is a critical requirement for success in this role.
