Reports to: Chief Curator & Artistic Director

Role Summary

The Head of Performing Arts & Public Programmes will lead the creative vision, curation, and delivery of a bold, year-round programme for the Blue Ocean Foundation's multipurpose auditorium and amphitheatre. This role combines artistic programming with cultural diplomacy, positioning the Foundation as a hub where local, regional, and international voices intersect. The Head will be responsible for cultivating partnerships, commissioning original works, and creating platforms for dialogue, civic engagement, and cross-cultural exchange.

Key Responsibilities

  • Programming & Curation
  • Develop and implement an annual calendar of live performances, festivals, conferences, and civic engagement events.
  • Curate thematic seasons around contemporary social, cultural, and political issues, ensuring diversity of voices and disciplines.
  • Commission new works and residencies, nurturing emerging and established artists.
  • Design multidisciplinary programming that blends theatre, performance art, spoken word, music, and public dialogue.
  • Cultural Diplomacy & Partnerships
  • Build cultural bridges through collaborations with international institutions, embassies, festivals, and touring companies.
  • Foster partnerships with local artists, community groups, NGOs, and civic organisations to amplify underrepresented voices.
  • Represent the Blue Ocean Foundation in regional and global cultural forums, positioning the institution as a thought leader in cultural exchange.
  • Negotiate co-productions, touring opportunities, and cross-border residencies to expand the Foundation's footprint beyond Karachi.
  • Production & Operations
  • Oversee all aspects of production, from technical rehearsals and live event logistics to front-of-house and audience experience.
  • Supervise technical, production, and stage management staff to ensure excellence in execution.
  • Ensure programmes are accessible and inclusive, with attention to language, disability access, and community engagement.
  • Management & Administration
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, contracts, and financial reporting for grants and sponsorships.
  • Collaborate with Development & Partnerships to secure funding and strategic support for programmes.
  • Track and report on audience metrics, community impact, and programming outcomes.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 7–10 years of senior experience in performing arts programming, production, or cultural management.
  • Strong curatorial vision with demonstrated leadership in multidisciplinary programming.
  • Proven track record of working across cultures, with international collaborators and cultural diplomacy projects.
  • Excellent project management, budgeting, and people management skills.
  • Skilled in negotiation, partnership-building, and engaging with artists, institutions, and civic stakeholders.
  • Deep understanding of audience development, cultural policy, and the role of the arts in social transformation.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with fluency in both local and international cultural contexts.
